About the Guest Ranch

birds eye view sowards creedeThere are many places on this astonishing earth that will completely take your breath away, and one of those destinations is Soward Ranch. The location of the ranch allows you to gaze upon four different valleys, where you can experience some of the finest sunrises and sunsets against the beautiful Rocky Mountains.   Each and every one of the guest cabins has a unique and spectacular view from their porches or picturesque windows.

The views are just the beginning of the amazing attributes that the ranch has to offer.  It sits on 1,300 acres of meadows, high country and rolling grasslands, which includes seven lakes, 2 streams and the Rio Grande River.

Soward Ranch is 9,000 feet in altitude, with the setting in an open valley ringed with beautiful mountains, which makes our summer days blissfully warm, with evenings moderately cool. A richness of colors that is a must see is; the autumn leaves that make their appearance around the month of September and sometimes longer.

Activities:

Our fishing areas include several miles each of Red Mountain, Trout and Lime Creeks, a short stretch of great Rio Grande River fishing, and several moderately sized lakes for fishing.  We are also within easy driving distance of many of the open state-stocked lakes, reservoirs, and streams.

Cabins are located at random to assure privacy and seclusion.  All cabins are completely modern with full bath, gas heating, and cooking.  Only one cabin is semi-modern with only a half bath; however, there is a central shower and laundramat available to guests.  All cabins are well-equipped housekeeping units with refrigerators, gas or eclectic ranges, microwaves, coffee makers, and toasters.  Dishes, silverware, utensils, bedding, linens and towels are also furnished.

History

smiley pete truckThe Soward Ranch is located 14 miles southwest of Creede, Colorado, in what was originally known as Antelope Park.  Ellen and Dan Soward homesteaded the main portion of the ranch in 1886, over 125 years ago and before the town of Creede existed.  It was operated solely as a cattle ranch with some commercial trout production until 1932 when guest cabins were added.  The ranch continues to be owned and operated by the same family and was honored in 1986 by the State Historical Society as a centennial year farm.
